About the artist
Juan Gris (1887–1927) was a Spanish painter and sculptor who played a pivotal role in developing the Cubist movement in early 20th-century Paris. Born José Victoriano Carmelo Carlos González-Pérez in Madrid, he adopted the pseudonym ‘Juan Gris’ when he moved to Paris in 1906.
Immersing himself in the city’s vibrant artistic community, Gris began producing profoundly innovative work, deeply influenced by his contemporaries Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. He is celebrated for his distinctive approach to Synthetic Cubism, a style characterized by the use of collage and a more colorful and complex methodology than its predecessor, Analytic Cubism.
Gris’s art often showcased still life objects in abstract, geometric compositions, merging different perspectives into one image. His mastery of shading and manipulation of form gave his works a sense of three-dimensionality within the typically flat Cubist style.
Although his career was short-lived due to his early death at 40, Juan Gris’s significant contributions to the Cubist movement have secured his legacy in the annals of modern art.
